Edinburgh council street scene policy

Summary of Street Scene policy

From the 1 April 2015 bins or bags of waste must only be put out for collection on streets during the following times

  • 9.30am to 12pm
  • 2pm to 4pm
  • 6.30pm to 11pm.

Within these times, waste is only allowed to be put out for up to one hour. It is your responsibility to arrange when your waste will be collected with your waste collector. If your waste remains uncollected, you should remove it from the street, store it on your premises and contact your waste collector to rearrange collection.

All bags and bins must be clearly marked with your business' name and collection time.

Waste may only be placed on the street when the business is staffed and not overnight.

Waste containers must be placed as near to the edge of a business' property as possible, whilst ensuring there is pedestrian access. You must not block the pavement or road.

Waste regulations

About the legislation

The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 require every business in Scotland to take the following actions:

  • Your business must present metal, plastic, glass, paper and card separately for collection from 1st January 2014.
  • If you run a food business which produces over 50kg of food waste per week, you must present it for separate collection from 1st January 2014.
  • The requirement to present food waste for separate collection will extend to all food businesses which produce over 5 kg of food waste per week from 1st January 2016.

If your business is located in a rural area, you are exempt from all the food waste requirements of the Regulations.
